Original Etching 1654. Signed & Dated in the Plate. Final State. Bartsch 63, Hind 275 ii/ii . Most likely printed from the original Copper Plate by P.F.Basan between 1789 & 1797. The Virgin has her foot on a snake marking her as a new Eve who will overcome Original Sin. The cat, playing with the hem of her skirt, is another motif often found in North European images of Eve as a symbolic embodiment of evil. The central oval window pane forms the shape of a halo around Mary`s head while Joseph looks in through the window. Rembrandt took the pose of the Virgin and Child from an engraving by Andrea Mantegna. Good margins although the sheet has been trimmed and the corners angled, in excellent condition.
